Santorini in one paragraph: a volcanic caldera island with cliff-top villages (Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, Oia) on the west side and black-sand beaches (Kamari, Perissa) on the east. Almost everything runs through Fira, the island's bus hub, so plan around it.

Quick answers
  • Fastest ferry from Athens: Seajets from Piraeus, about 5 h – 6 h 10 min. [1]
  • Flight from Athens: about 45 minutes. [1]
  • Ferries arrive at Athinios port, about 20 min by bus from Fira. Ticket €2.70. [3]
  • Bus Fira → Oia: every 30 min in summer (07:00–21:00), €2.20. [2][3]

By air

Santorini airport (JTR) is about 10 minutes by bus from Fira (€2.20), with buses roughly hourly from 06:00 to 23:00 on the summer timetable [2][3].

2. Getting around: bus vs car vs ATV

Option Best for Watch out for
KTEL bus Fira-based stays, Oia sunset trips, Kamari/Perissa beaches Most routes need a change in Fira; crowded around sunset
Rental car Akrotiri, Pyrgos, wineries, southern beaches, early/late airport and port runs Parking in Oia and Fira is very limited in high season
ATV / quad Short hops between beaches Needs a category B (car) licence in Greece [5]; busy roads with tour buses

Official bus facts (KTEL Santorini, summer timetable)

From Fira to First – last departure Frequency (approx.) Fare
Oia 07:00 – 21:00 every 30 min €2.20
Kamari 07:15 – 23:00 every 30 min most of the day €2.20
Perissa 07:00 – 22:00 hourly €2.70
Akrotiri 08:30 – 20:00 every 30–60 min €2.20
Airport 06:00 – 23:00 hourly €2.20
Athinios port timed to ferries — €2.70

From the official KTEL Santorini timetable and fare list [2][3][6]. Winter timetables are much thinner, so check before you travel.

Want your own wheels for Akrotiri, Pyrgos and the wineries? Compare rental companies at the airport and port: Discover Cars – Santorini car hire. Book early for July–August.

Our rule of thumb: staying in Fira for 2–3 days? The bus is enough. Staying in Oia, Imerovigli or a beach village for 4+ days? Rent a car for 1–2 days to see the south.

3. Where to stay

Area Caldera view? Bus Good for
Fira Yes Hub, all lines First-timers, no car, nightlife
Firostefani / Imerovigli Yes, quieter Fira–Imerovigli line [2] Couples, views without Fira's crowds
Oia Yes, famous sunsets Every 30 min to Fira Honeymoons; it gets very busy at sunset
Kamari No Every 30 min to Fira Beach, families, better value
Perissa No Hourly to Fira Long black-sand beach, budget
